Since he already had his website developed, we visited it to check it out. What a disappointment! His whole web site was created with Macromedia Flash.

Yes, the site is pretty and has enough sound-effects to rival a town fair (fireworks included); however, it's completely useless to submit it to search engines, and to anything else, for that matter.

Don't take me wrong, I like a good flash animation as much as the next guy and I've seen fabulous work in videogames and business presentations with this tool. The problem is that it is misused, overriding the most basic elements that are required when developing a website. What is supposed to be a good auxiliary tool becomes the principal feature of the site. From my point of view, designers who use only flash for a web site don't know what they're doing.

Why am I so negative about this? Let me explain:

1. It is expensive. Generally, flash design requires more time from the designer, which translates in more cost to the client. If you choose to use flash for your site, prepare to pay more for the same. Also, this time will affect the release of your project

2. Difficult modifications. Since a flash site needs more attention to detail, each modification made by the designer will have to be reviewed carefully to avoid any mistakes. Of course, this is more time, and more money for you.

3. It can't be indexed. Search engines can't read flash code, so all your precious work (and fireworks) will go to waste. Optimization for a flash website is almost nil/

4. Load time. There is nothing more annoying than waiting for a flash site to load. Think of your clients trying to check your products and services while looking at "loading... please wait", and how many of them will simply close their browsers and go to your competitor's website.

5. Expensive maintenance. Do you want to change a phone number? Need to place a new product or change a price? Be ready to pay a king's ransom. Again, it will take days to make what would take mere hours with HTML, and it will cost you triple that.

6. The code gets lost. Sounds stupid and it is. The most common problem with flash websites is when the code gets lost, either because nobody can find it, the designer no longer works at the company you hired, or the files are simply corrupted and no longer useful. If you had made your site with HTML, you would only need to copy all existing information and make a new page, for less money and in less time.

Do you think your site doesn't have these problems because you only use a flash screen (one of those obnoxious short presentations that run when entering a website) and everything else is in HTML? Let me tell you that your flash presentation bores visitors after the first viewing, and I would rather use other sites that won't make me waste my time.

Bookmark this article:
Article Source: http://wah-articles.work-from-home-directory.com/
About the Author
Founder and actual CEO, Ricardo d'Argence has been in the field for more than ten years. The myth is that having links from the same class C IP address will not help you. If you don't know what I am talking about here's how you breakdown an IP address.

AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD

So where the CCC is that number needs to be vary. The reasoning behind this is that someone could get web hosting and put 1,000 different sites on it and then link them all to one site trying to gain its link popularity. So the search engines put an end to that by using the IP of the sites to calculate how much weight to give the link.

There are quite a few people that don't believe that this myth is true just for the simple fact of how popular shared hosting is. If this myth is true then all those sites on the same shared hosting server cant help each other out with ranking.

There is some evidence that can prove this myth though. I have followed many discussions on this topic and have seen some results that make me a believer. The results basically just prove how a site with far less links can out rank a site with a ton more links. This is because the site with less links has a ton more different class C IP's links than the one with just more links.

Like I said I am a firm believer in this myth and I don't even like to refer to it as a myth but until proven beyond a doubt I will call it that just to make people happy. So when you are doing link building be sure to check out the IP address on where your link will be placed in order to make sure your link will pull the most weight.

Bookmark this article:
Article Source: http://wah-articles.work-from-home-directory.com/
About the Author
Written by Aaron Nimocks, SEO Professional at the SEO Company

<trackback:ping>http://todayseo.com/cmd.asp?act=tb&id=245&key=09a072ee</trackback:ping>

10 Steps to a Spider Friendly Website

The 10 steps below will ensure that GoogleBot and other search engine spiders are able to crawl your site with little effort when they visit you. The search engines job is to index as many pages as possible from the web and they do this by trying to find the most efficient pages to process so that they may move on to the next. You can ensure their favor by helping them to index your site efficiently and effectively.

Proper Nesting

Many spiders are built to parse the HTML on your page. One of the things that may confuse a parser or cause it to work harder is improper nesting of HTML elements on a page. These are tags that are opened and closed out of order such as abc...cab versus abc...cba In order to have the spiders crawl through your page flawlessly, visit validator.w3c.org and use their HTML validator specifically looking for error messages that say "end tag for '####' omitted, but its declaration does not permit this" or "end tag for element '####' which is not open". These are errors that signify improper nesting and while they may allow some spiders to visit your website, your site will lose valuable SEO points because the spiders cannot visit your site as efficiently as it can visit other sites. Remember, search engines need to spider many pages quickly to stay in their game.

Use of Frames

This is a spider killer if there ever was one. You simply cannot link to a specific page in a framed site with any effectiveness. If you link directly to a page within the frame, the rest of the framed page disappears. If you link to the main frames page, there is no way to link to the subpages and only your homepage(s) will show. I-Frames offer a slight advantage as they are contained within a page that has it's own URL, but many times the content within an I-Frame is inaccessible. Don't place your navigation or main content into an I-Frame.

SessionID's in Your URLs

These lead to a seemingly unending list of variations on each URL that have no real effect on the page. Every time a spider visits your pages, they get more and more versions of the same 'other' pages, but with different URLs each time because of the sessionID. If you want the spiders to feel at home on your site, then the barbed-wire fields of sessionIDs are not going to work. One way around this is to use a sitemap creation service like AutoMapIt.com that allow you to 'ignore' certain URL keys like the sessionID or keys used for sorting lists. This way, they have at least one link to each page that doesn't include a sessionID. Even if they are turned off at your sitemap, when the spiders visit, they will find the IDs again.

SessionID's may show up in otherwise friendly URLs. If your users have to log-in on your site or you use some types of tracking software, sessionID's are what helps your site to keep visitors logged in. They are usually stored in cookies through your browser and don't normally show up in your URL. If cookies are not available (like on most spiders), the sessionID then gets passed through the URL. You may want to turn cookies off in your browser and surf your site... do the sessionIDs show up?

Search-Friendly URLs

This goes beyond the sessionID's in the URL and appeal more to the actual URLs being used. According to Google Webmaster Guidelines, "It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few". Apache makes this easy through mod_rewrite and Windows servers offer Isapi-Rewrite to accomplish turning 'ugly' URLs into 'static' URLs. You should NEVER use id= in your URLs as Google does not to spider those pages. Change it to cid= or lmnopid=, but if you use id=, your pages are already doomed from the start.

Proper Meta Tags

Despite their value decreasing, and a lot of talk about them being of no use now, meta tags are anything but dead. Google uses your meta-description as the description on their SERPs. Yahoo uses description tags and prefer sites that have them. Many other search engines use the meta keywords as well. Even if they only verify that it is present and correct, many search engines won't touch your site without them. The meta robots tag is unnecessary unless it's restricting access to a page. It is the spiders natural state to index a page and follow all links from it. Using it to 'allow' spiders only increases your code:text ratio needlessly and may hurt your potential rank by a slight amount.

Javascript/Images/Flash

Use these sparingly to accentuate your site for users. You should never rely on these for critical website functions like navigation, content, or other vital page info. Even though 98% of the internet uses javascript, turning it off along with images and multimedia in your browser (or using the Lynx browser) will allow you to visit your site as the search engines do. This 20 minute task will alert you to potential problems that your site will have when the search engines visit.

Links

Most everyone knows that links into your website bring spiders to visit and help your rank, but the links within your site to itself and other websites are also very important. Google limits you to 100 links per page and most other engines are rather close (but perhaps more generous) and allow you 150 or so links per page. This is total for links within your site and links to other sites.

Keyword stats and code:text ratio

Your goal should be to have the most content possible (human readable) while limiting the amount of code used to deliver this. Keywords should be limited to a few select phrases and possibly some variations on those phrases. If you are at all considering any meaningful SEO work on your site, you should really invest your first few dollars into finding the right keywords. There are many free keyword tools such as Wordtracker.com to at least give you a start, but the few extra dollars for the upgrades are usually well worth it if you want to target the correct markets and find terms that you weren't expecting.

Standards Compliant/Accessible

This builds on the Validator tool used earlier from W3C. By making your website completely standards compliant, you remove any possible errors in the code that may hang-up a spider. While complete compliance is not as critical as parsing errors from open tags and truly broken code, it certainly helps to ease the process of being spidered.

Branding

The links within your site should all use the same www. or non-www. branding. Many search engines see those variants as two separate sites and Google will even apply different PR to a page based on www or non-www. This can be further enforced by changing your htaccess file to automatically switch versions if the other is visited. If you visit the non-www version of my sites, it will automatically be forwarded to the www version. This is not a critical step, but it is a major enhancement for not a lot of work involved. Why split your value in half when you can focus it like a laser? Just be sure to request links, add your link to profiles, and link to your own site from within your site using one version or the other, but not both.

Following these ten steps will help to ensure that your site is well-received by ALL of the search engine spiders and will not limit you to the bare essentials for only one spider (or bad ranking with all of the spiders equally). Let's face it, if you have ever tried to get better rank on a search engine, you know that any break you can get will help. These steps should be performed at the creation of your web site and continue throughout it's life-cycle to ensure that the spiders are always able to visit your site with as little effort on their part as possible.

Bookmark this article:
Article Source: http://wah-articles.work-from-home-directory.com/
About the Author
Shawn Snarski is the creator of the AutoMapIt Google Sitemap Generator and is a LAMP developer with over 7 years experience. Some of these include keyword research, on-page optimization, off-page optimization, acquiring inbound links, and tracking your rankings.

Fortunately, there are many tools that have been created to aid web masters in each of these tasks.

Below I have reviewed 7 of the top SEO tools so that you can quickly find out what your site needs to rise in the search engines.

First up is the "Cool SEO Tool". I'll let you decide whether or not it lives up to its name.

Cool SEO Tool

This tool allows you to compare your site against the top 10 listed sites in Google for a particular keyword or phrase. You simply enter your keyword and the system will begin comparing 9 different metrics for the top 10 rankings. This allows you to quickly compare the Yahoo rank, MSN rank, Google pages indexed, altavista pages indexed, backlinks to page, backlinks to domain, allinanchor rank, age of url, and whether or not the phrase is on the page.

This tool can unveil extremely valuable information on how you can break into the top 10 search engine positions. Try it out at http://www.webuildpages.com/cool-seo-tool/

XML-Sitemaps

Google wants to make sure that webmasters have a way of communicating information that is important about their sites. To accomodate this, they created Google Sitemaps in 2005. Using this tool, you can tell Google when you have created new pages and how often your pages are updated. To get your pages indexed as quickly as possible, it is in your best interest to create a sitemap for Google as well as for Yahoo.

Unfortunately, finding a sitemap generator that is easy to use can be a frustrating task. However, after a lot of digging, I think I've found one that you will like.

At xml-sitemaps.com, they have created a sitemap generator that enables you to create a xml sitemap for Google and a text-based sitemap for Yahoo. In addition, the generator can also create an optional HTML sitemap for human visitors.

Go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com for step-by-step instructions on how to get started.

Ultimate Keyword Tool

Keywords are the lifeblood of any site. Choose the wrong ones and your site will quickly fizzle. Choose the right keywords and you will start to see an abundance of traffic as well as sales. The key is choosing keyword phrases that aren't viciously competitive and convert well into sales.

For example, did you know that keyword phrases that are 3-5 words long convert into sales much more often than any other keyphrase length? Not to mention, these longer keyword phrases are also usually much easier to rank for.

One of the best keyword tools is provided by SeoBook.com.

You simply enter in a keyword or phrase and hit sugggest. Once you have done this, the keyword tools will return a variety of data, including:

overture suggestions of additional keywords
top overture bid prices
estimated monthly search volume
number of Google, Yahoo, and MSN search results
Wordtracker keyword suggestions
Google traffic Estimates
synonyms and....
additional related keywords using the Adwords keyword tool
For a keyword tool that has it all, go to http://tools.seobook.com/general/keyword/ Link Popularity

For many of the top search engines, link popularity is one of the top ranking factors. Because of this, there have been a large number of link popularity tools to be released. However, after trying out quite a few of them, I settled on URLTrends.com (http://www.urltrends.com/). This site enables you to find out your link popularity on 8 different search engines.

Monitor Your Search Engine Positions

Monitoring your search engine positions is crucial to any successful marketing campaign. To obtain the highest possible search engine traffic, you must be able to monitor any sudden drops in your rankings. If you don't know where you stand, there is no way you can take corrective measures.

Fortunately, there is a tool that allows you to track all of your keywords for free.

This tool allows you to track:

numerous keyword rankings
backlinks
pagerank and...
daily, weekly and monthly changes in your rankings. Link Harvester:

quickly finds almost every single site that is linking to you
reports how many pages of your web site are indexed
reports how many links are pointing to any specific page
provides links to the Wayback Machine and WhoIs source next to each domain
reports the total number of inbound links, home page links, and deep link ratio
quickly grabs the number of .gov, .edu, and .ac.uk inbound links
indicates if a site links to your site more than 5 times by bolding that particular link in the list of results.
If you find this tool useful, you can even add it to your own site. Link Harvester is open source, so web masters are free to share it and developers are free to improve upon it.

Do your own link analysis at http://www.linkhounds.com/link-harvester/

Web CEO

I consider this the macdaddy of all of the seo tools. If you have not tried already, submitting to thousands of article directories can be a long and painful experience. One of the tools that is most useful in helping you get your articles out is Article Submission Software but be warned not all Article Submission Software is the same.
There are in fact five key issues you must consider before investing hundreds of dollars in Article Submission Software. The five core issues to consider are as follows:

1. Ability to Add New Directories to your Software 2. Ability to Have Independent Logins for Each Article Directory 3. Must Have the Ability to Submit to a range of at Least Five Categories 4. The Ability to Automatically Submit Articles 5. Ability to Prevent a Submission If There is No Categories

I am sure you are quite aware of the dynamic change that occurs on the internet and how it is in a constant state of change and in the world of article directories this is an absolute.

The first issue that you must ensure your new article directory software is able to do is to add new article directories to your list of submission sites. Often article submission software will come with preset lists of article directories and for example they may come with 300 article directories programmed into the software. The problem with this is that you will find over a period of months that the operability of these article directories will change.

For example, when I first started using article submission software the tool I was using had roughly 300 article directories. With in 2 months of using this software over 60 of those directories became in-operable. This meant the software usefulness became less and less as time went on.

Some of the other issues that you will find are that some article directories will not approve articles regularly or they may have a policy of only approving a certain number per month and if you are a regular writer you could find that your articles are not approved. Non-approved articles are costing you money, so whilst the software may specify that it submits to 300 articles, in reality only 40 directories may approve your article in the first week and less and less approve it as time goes on. As such, the more article directories you submit to, the more likely it will show up in the directories and people will use it on their own websites.

In the article directory world there are roughly three or four article directory engines and each one has its own issues. Your article submission software must be able to work with all article directory types and an important aspect is to be able to have a unique login for each article directory. The reason you will need this is that some sites use a common login system rather than your email address which will be unique. For example the article dashboard directory engine uses your email address as the logon which as such must be unique on the internet. Other article directory engines use a logon that you have to create. You may find when registering for these article directories that your logon is already used, so for this directory you will need an alternative logon. As such it is better to have each article directory with its own logon in the Article Submission tool.

Every article submission software system must have the ability to choose five categories in which an article could be submitted to. One of the things my team and I have found in surveying the thousands of article directories on the internet is that no two article directories have the same list of categories that you can submit your articles to. Because of this you need to purchase article submission software that allows you to choose up to five categories so that you have the greatest chance of finding a category automatically.

The next issue is an extension of the previous paragraph and that is, the software must skip the article submission process if it cannot choose or find an appropriate category. The quickest way to be banned from article directories is to submit your articles to the wrong the categories. It is better to not submit your article to the article directory than to submit it to the wrong category.

The last and final issue that your article submission software should have is to be able to automatically submit your articles. If you can not submit your articles automatically then you will find that the process of article submission will be painful and long winded. What I have found in the past, is that if you do not automatically submit your articles, you will find after a while that your passion and desire for writing articles will wane simply because of the time that it takes to submit them.

If you are buying Article Submission Software, use it wisely. One of the big mistakes I see with people who buy this software is that they will submit their same article to the article directory 4 or 5 times over a period of a few months. Let me be blunt - DO NOT DO IT - YOU WILL GET BANNED. You should only be using this software to submit your articles ONCE! Article Directory owners do not tolerate spamming of their article directories and in reality, it does not help you. The secret to article directories and using it in your seo strategy is to write regularly.

You will find that the more you write, the easier it will get. However, if you write one article and resubmit it or change only the heading or a few words, article directory owners will pickup on this and you could find yourself banned. If you ever accidentally submit your article more than once, make sure you visit every site and delete the additional submissions. Once again, article directory owners take a dim view on people who spam their directories so DO NOT DO IT.

Article Submission Software can be a huge time saver but it must be used wisely in the SEO Process and it must be used ethically. If you are not going to be an ethical writer then you will find yourself banned in the article directories and you will not have any recourse.
