The problem with this talk is that it assumes the logic behind these algorithms is to help us find what we want, rather than to make Google and Facebook more attractive to advertisers.
Television programming studies have proved that numbers of watchers may be irrelevant to networks if they are not the watchers desired by advertisers. Google and Facebook are not necessarily tailoring simply on the basis of what we search–they are very likely tailoring on the basis of what and whether we buy.
